One of the biggest misconceptions is that people think the Amish are something other than what they are. They are people just like everyone else, they have problems, they prosper, they live, they die, they are normal. Some people put them up on a pedestal, no-one needs to be put there. Another thing is most people don't realize that Amish is their church denomination. (Like Methodists, Catholics, Mennonites, Baptists, etc.)

Another misconception is that Amish live in a commune. THEY DO NOT. Each family lives in their own house and is responsible for their own welfare and up keep of their property. If they do share a meal is because they have been invited to someone's house as supper guests.

They love to play games, such as baseball & volleyball, put puzzles together or play board games. Some have game nights with relatives or neighbors and play board games. Most Amish have a great sense of humor and love to play practical jokes on each other.

The Amish live on farms anywhere from 80 to 160 acres completely surrounding the town of Arthur. They do come into Arthur regularly and can been seen at the businesses downtown or at the countryside businesses surrounding Arthur.

There are about 4,000 Amish in the Arthur Amish community. It is the 4th largest Amish community in the United States.

Holmes County, Ohio is the largest, then Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and then northern Indiana.

Yes, believe they do not need electricity to live their simple live style, “in the world but not of the the world.” They have gas refrigerators, gas cooking stoves, wringer washing machines and treadle sewing machines. And yes, they do have indoor plumbing.

One of the Ten Commandments state to “not make any graven image”. They do not want someone to make a picture of them and then worship that picture. And they do not have pictures of themselves for that very reason.

Normally, they travel about 10 mph.
